Biodegradable vs. Compostable vs. Recyclable

Compostable and biodegradable are often used interchangeably although they do not mean the same thing. All compostable items are biodegradable, but not all biodegradable products are compostable. For a product to be labeled biodegradable, it must have the ability to turn into organic matter. Biodegradable products break down between three and six months if disposed of properly in facilities that regulate temperature, moisture, and air levels. Synthetic products take several hundred years to decompose. Composting, in comparison, is the process of recycling organic waste for reuse and breaks down in a few months. The composting process allows organic carbon to return to the earth and reduces methane emissions (aka greenhouse gases).
